Respect - Never Demand It, Earn It
Respect - Never Demand It, Earn It
Respect is a small word but plays a very important role in everybody's life. It works on a simple formula of give and take. If you will give respect then in return you will get respect. If you are not giving respect to another person then don't seek respect from him/her in return.
In today's modern world most of the people give respect to the powerful or rich people only. They feel ashamed when it comes to showing respect to the poor, uneducated, juniors etc. They behave badly with such type of people. Respect is meant for all human beings. It has nothing to do with our financial status, our position, our education etc. All human beings, animals, birds etc. should be respected. We must understand that we should never demand it, we should earn it. It is not a one day process to earn it. Sometimes it takes a whole life.
"Treat people you want to be treated, talk to people you want to be talked to. Respect is earned."
Self-respect and other's respect - First of all we must respect ourselves. We should not be ashamed of what we are and we should always keep on improving ourselves. We should also respect others for what they are. Nowadays, most people respect the status, education or position of others rather than respecting people. If someone is rich then people will give him/her more respect than poor people. So we can say that we are biased on giving respect to others.
"We should not be impressed by money, social status or job title. We should be impressed by the way someone treats other human beings."
Respect is also very important in a relationship. We should respect our partner, only then we can live life happily. We should respect each other's opinions, thoughts, work, education, responsibilities, gender etc. We should never try to show our superiority in any way in a relationship. Giving respect doesn't cost anything but it changes our value in other's eyes.
We should respect our parent and kids also. Home is always the first school for kids. They learn so many things form their parents or elders. So treat your elders or parents the same way you expect of your kids when you are old.
"Show respect even to people who doesn't deserve it; not as a reflection of their character, but as a reflection of yours."
If you are giving respect to everyone then nobody will mind it. All people will appreciate this. Giving respect to others is not a very difficult task, we only need to be polite or humble to others. If you give respect to others then they will start caring more for you. More people will start loving you. More people will come closer to you.
Suppose, if you are in a senior position in your office then you should not force your juniors or staff to respect you. If they are not respecting you then it is your fault. You should deal with them in such a way that they should automatically respect you. They should respect you in front of you and behind your back also. We need to earn this type of respect. Remember that if someone respects you then it should be from his/her core of heart, it should be for you as a good human being and not for your status or position etc.
Earning respect is the biggest earning of life.
